Day 1

So it is officially Day 1. I have tried really hard not to eat anything with sugar over the past couple of days, but haven’t been too strict about it. Although, I didn’t eat any of the chocolates that were passed around after last night’s bike workout that I was coaching. It was so nice of one of the participants to bring them and they looked good. It wasn’t that hard, actually, to say no. I have always had a lot of self-control once I decide something. Last night I felt kind of like crap. When I checked my food … Keep reading

“Vegan Fundraising for Cancer? Uhhh… why?”

This upcoming Friday, MellowJohnny and I are holding a fundraiser for our endeavour to run a marathon for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We have had lukewarm reception about it being completely vegan. One co-worker said that her husband would not go “unless there is going to be steak.” Of course, since I am playing a huge part in making the food obviously I’m going to make it vegan. However, this is so much more than just my own personal choice. In the documentary “Forks over Knives” the scientists and film-makers show compelling evidence around animal protein being linked with … Keep reading

Fast Food Indeed

Today I got home from work like so many other people in western civilization –  very hungry. My stomach was growling the whole way between work and home. It was at this moment that it made so much sense to me why so many people eat at fast food restaurants. As a vegan, though, I am lucky enough to have very few options in the world of fast food and, therefore, am never tempted to put such gross “food” into my body. So instead of eating at a greasy fast food restaurant, I made my own fast food! It’s quite … Keep reading

Electrolytes – The Key to my Health?

As an athlete, I am aware (as most are) that electrolytes are imperative to staying hydrated. I take this very seriously. I often consider myself one of the best hydrated people I know. I drink a lot of water every day and use electrolyte drinks on heavy training days (a long workout over 1 hour or two workouts in one day). As a side note, did you know that Gatorade has the more carbs and electrolytes than the other sports drinks? It does – read the labels! Because I am a believer in holistic medicine and healing (ie. the whole … Keep reading

Food Post: Nutloaf Fail!

Ever since I recently read about a nutloaf, I thought it was brilliant! I could taste the savory flavours that I already was imagining combined with the rich texture of walnuts, cashews, and almonds! Yum. So I began my search for a nutloaf recipe that I thought was manageable. I found one on the good ol’ internet, after my trusty How it All Vegan cookbooks had no such recipe. It was the ABC Nutloaf from The Vegan Chef. So I got all the ingredients and got ready to make it. It wasn’t difficult, but it was a bit time consuming. … Keep reading

Red meat? I see Red!

Sometimes on my laptop, I open windows that I want to look at at a later date. Sometimes those windows stay open for a week or longer. It’s true, I don’t close my windows enough. Currently, I have 20 tabs open on my Google Chrome. So I was just going to close some of them when I saw an article that I had obviously left open for me to read when I had more time, like right now. This article is titled “Why Cyclists Should Eat Red Meat” from Active.com. Firstly, the title is very off-putting in my opinion. I’m … Keep reading

A Food Post: Refried Beans!

Refried Beans2

In the last few months I have been more frugal in my life to save money for specific future endeavours. To do this, I have looked at foods that are simpler, cheaper, and healthier. Funny enough, these factors often go together! As an athlete and a generally busy person I don’t usually have a lot of time to prepare meals. I tri to cook larger meals on the weekend and eat leftovers, but as the week progresses I either get sick of the leftovers or have eaten it all. As a single person, meal planning is pretty simple and I … Keep reading

Farewell December!

December is always a difficult month to be motivated to train. It is busy with parties and family gatherings, not to mention buying presents and preparing for the holiday season. This December I was working in retail and it was BUUUUSY! Also, I had two clients have babies in the early part of the month and it really messed up my sleep schedule. Both births went really well with minor complications and both moms and babies are happy and healthy after their natural birth. I did manage to get in the odd run thanks to my good friend, Kelly. She … Keep reading

Do not underestimate dehydration!

Today my friend and I went for a run and accidentally* ran off-and-on for two hours (we shopped in there for about 20 minutes). It was -27 degrees Celsius with the windchill (about -20 without it) and we had planned for a 30-45 minute run. I had eaten at 5:30am and we started running around 9am. I had not drank any water between there because I was busy**. At the end of the “run” we ate some food and I went home. I hardly drank any water after the run at all. By the way, we ran a little over … Keep reading
