Ouch… DOMS takes over

Since I’ve been back into training, over the past4 weeks or so, I have been experiencing a lot of DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). Since I don’t usually work out for this long at a stretch – at least I haven’t in quite a while – I am not sure if this is going to be a constant thing or if it will go away. I sure hope it goes away. My upper back is incredibly sore, my thighs, calves, and IT bands burn, and even my arms are sore. I’ve went for a couple of massages, but I think … Keep reading

A swim-oriented week

This past week has been kind of full of swim workouts. I swam three times and I’m loving it! It feels so good to get back into my swimming groove, even though I have felt less powerful in my stroke and my right shoulder has been bothering me (more on that later). This morning I did 3100m with the triathlon club and it was hard work, but, honestly, at the pace I was going, I could have swam all day. I’m not sure if that’s what I should be doing or if I should be pushing it harder during the … Keep reading

Slow Down

All athletes need to know when to slow down. Last week was one of those weeks for me. The week before I had a sinus cold and kept training, going to work, and doing everyday things. Over Thanksgiving weekend that caught up with me and I was down and out for five days. It really sucked and I missed training and going to the gym. I guess that’s what they say about “absence makes the heart grow fonder” and all that jazz… it can translate to training! Yesterday I swam with the local tri club and I had no problems … Keep reading

Protein, Protein, Protein!

I consider myself a “professional label reader” to make sure there are no dairy, eggs, or other hidden ingredients that are not vegan. However, now I also look at the Nutrition List on all of the food items as well. It has been over a year since I thought this much about protein. I have kept a log for the past couple of days to approximate how much protein I’m taking in. For my weight, I figure I need to consume around 80-90 grams of protein/day. This is not the easiest thing in the world to do. I’m having to … Keep reading

A Food Post: Quinoa Salad

Today I was in a bit of a hurry for a potluck with some friends. On my walk home, I thought about the ingredients I had. I knew that I had lots of quinoa, some scraps of veggies, and some salad dressing that I had made the other day. I put them together and made a super awesome salad, I have to admit. Here is how I did it: 2 cups of cooked quinoa (2 cups quinoa, 3 cups water – bring to boil then to min for about 15 minutes) red, yellow, and orange peppers (half) diced 2 grated … Keep reading

Active Recovery and Food

On Monday I biked to work in a snow/rain storm in the name of active recovery. I knew that I wouldn’t have the energy to do anything more than that after work. On Tuesday, I took my pup for a much-needed walk in the morning and then for a nice, chilled out run/walk in the evening. I realized on this walk/run that this was what active recovery felt like! And I have to admit that on Wednesday morning, my DOMS (ie. delayed onset muscle soreness) felt much better. My massage later that day also helped! It probably also helped that … Keep reading

Happy New Year to all!

Right. So it’s been a while since I’ve updated. It’s also been a while since I have trained. My two weeks “off” for the holidays turned into four. This was mostly due to my health being very poor. Not my physical health, my mental health. Usually I can work through one of my “downs” quickly and with the help of exercise. However, with the weather being utterly miserable, my schedule being out of wack, and my motivation being at zero, I just couldn’t do it. I could barely get myself out of bed, let alone to the pool for a … Keep reading

Time Flies

I can’t believe it has been a month since I have updated this. In my head, while I’m training, I keep thinking, “*Subject* would be a great thing to write about,” but then it leaves my head as soon as my workout is done. The biggest reason/excuse for not updating this blog is because I have been seriously lacking in time and motivation to blog. In the past month, I have been going through some emotional turmoil about an ended relationship and a friend who decided to take his own life. This has left me reeling a bit and has … Keep reading

Swimming: I Love It!

Yesterday in the pool, I felt very strong. I did the workout my coach had set out: 300m choice 2 x 900m (100m flutter kick, 200m back stroke, 300m freestyle, 200m breast stroke, 100m flutter kick) 200m choice TOTAL: 2300m I do believe my coach is torturing by making me do 200m of back stroke without anything in between. I always get dizzy and am completely paranoid about hitting my head, especially at the pool that I swim in at lunch time. The pool lanes are crooked to the ceiling beams and they don’t have flags to mark the 5m-from-the-wall … Keep reading
