A mere two days ago, I ran 3km at a snails pace and felt terrible. It was my first run since being healthy again. Compare that to tonight, when I went for a 6km run in 45 minutes. I felt great from the very beginning. The temperature was perfect at -4 degrees C and the [...]
After being sick for over two weeks, I did my first outdoor activity today: I ran. It wasn’t very long or far, but it sure felt good. It’s nice to use my legs again and get my heart pumping and the sweat flowing. Tomorrow I’m going to swim and go bike riding, but I think [...]
I really have nothing to report. I have been sick since Wednesday night. I caught a chest cold and have decided not to train until I have recovered 100%. Last year a friend of mine trained through a chest cold and it developed into pneumonia. She was out the whole season. So I’m erring on [...]
2007 is definitely going to be one for the books with Ironman, marathon, biking, and lots of training! I’m excited to train hard and be prepared for this year’s triathlon season.
This morning I went on my new year ritual run solo-style. It felt good running today. I really like new beginnings and I look [...]
I started my bike workout today thinking it would be a piece of cake. 1 hour?! No problem! However, about halfway through the workout, my legs were really fatigued. “What is going on?” I asked myself. Then I remembered that I haven’t even been on a bike in a week. A whole week! Usually I [...]
I thought that I would do a lot less training over the holidays than I did, but it still wasn’t very much. On Boxing Day I went on a 6-mile run. It was one of the best runs in the past little while. I was at my parent’s farm in middle-of-nowhere Saskatchewan and my dad [...]
Yesterday was my day off. My hamstrings were still a bit sore, so that was good. I didn’t do a lot of anything, except walking around trying to get Christmas shopping done. This is what I have found to be most difficult: juggling work, training, AND getting ready for Christmas. Really, it’s ridiculous! I’m so [...]
I wimped out yesterday. Yep, I did.
I did yoga in the morning, but was so extremely tired after work that I could NOT make myself get on the bike. It really didn’t help that I had a brutal commute home and was almost hit twice and had a verbal altercation with a guy driving [...]

I found a trick to drinking protein powder:
BANANAS!
Tonight I tried the berry-flavoured Vega protein powder (I bought the sample packages so that I could see what I liked best) with a banana, and some soy milk. It was actually pretty tastey. I would recommend throwing a banana into the mix if anyone ever [...]

VT has a new look!
Purple has a new meaning in my life as it is the main colour of Team in Training, a group that raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This cause is very near and dear to my heart as my friend and main training buddy had Leukemia & Lymphoma when he was a child. Blood cancer can be very deadly, so I am thankful for the treatment and care that he got.
It is for this reason that we decided to run a marathon together with the Team in Training group in Saskatoon. We have a goal of $5,500!
What is VT?
This website is one that I, Crystal Clarke, started in 2007 with big ideas. It is morphing slowly into a resourceful website for vegans and athletes alike. I put my personal touch on this website in the recipes and the training blog, as I'm a writer & a vegan triathlete. So what is a vegan triathlete? Well...
vegan. n. vee-gahn. - a person who refrains from using any animal product whatever for food, clothing, or any other purpose.
triathlete. n. someone who participates in races consisting of swimming, biking, and running in that order; there are several varying distances with some standard distances:
Sprint: 750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run
Olympic: 1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run
Half Ironman: 2km swim, 90km bike, 21.1km run
Ironman: 3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42.2km runPlease leave comments! I love reading and replying to comments. Cheers!
Who am I?
My name is Crystal Clarke. I'm a vegan triathlete. I've been vegan since 2002 and a triathlete since 2003. Since then I have completed 1 Ironman, 4 half IMs, several Olympic triathlons, and many other triathlons, duathlons, running races, and biking races. My goal for each race is to finish. I'm pretty slow, but can be a middle-of-the-pack person if I'm not injured and train consistently.
In addition to being a vegan triathlete, I'm a writer, I'm an Agrologist, I'm a soil scientist, I'm a knitter, I'm an anti-consumer, I'm an environmentalist, I'm a budding Buddhist, I'm a yogi, I'm a student of life, and I'm bipolar. I'm a lot of things! I don't fit into any one category - that's what I think sets me apart from other athlete blogs.
